Almost every other step in your first weeks in Germany — salary payments, health insurance, even some rental contracts — depends on having a working Bankkonto, so it is worth getting right the first time.
Most banks will ask for your passport, your Anmeldung confirmation, and sometimes proof of employment or your visa/residence permit documentation. Some banks let you open an account before your Anmeldung is finalized; others require it first, so it is worth checking ahead rather than assuming.
Online-only banks are often faster to set up and popular with newcomers, while traditional branch banks can be more patient with in-person questions if your German is still developing. Either way, ask specifically about fees for international transfers if you plan to send money home regularly — this varies more between banks than people expect.
Once your account is active, keep your IBAN handy — you will be asked for it more often, and sooner, than almost any other piece of information in your first month.
